Why You Should ‘Embrace’ Those Who Unsubscribe From Your Email List

You put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into creating the awesome content you know your blog readers will love, but once in a while, just keep in mind that although you may have a healthy list of loyal blog subscribers, you can’t possibly please absolutely everybody, and you’ll get people leaving.

I’m sure this scenario below has happened to you on many occasions.

You log into your Aweber or MailChimp, or whichever email marketing provider you use to check the stats for your recent email campaigns.  You see a bunch of new subscribers as always, but then you also suddenly notice that a considerable number of people have unsubscribed from your list in the same process.

Your reaction is: “What? Wait a minute… But… How… When… C’mon man?”

Quit stressing about it, it happens to us all.

But I know that doesn’t stop you from feeling pretty low about it right?

But here’s the deal folk, you shouldn’t be feeling low just because a small handful of people have decided that they no longer want to be on your email list, in fact you should be rejoicing, shouting from the rooftops and crying with happiness…

OK maybe you shouldn’t be celebrating to that extent, I was kidding a bit there, nobody likes to see people unsubscribing from their email list, but seriously, look at it in another way, in a more positive way.

There are some benefits to be gained from having people remove themselves from your email list, let’s take a look at a few of them.

1. Your list is looking after itself

Yes! That’s right; look at it as if your list is self-managing itself.  You don’t need to be wasting precious amounts of your time finding and removing dead emails one at a time, it’s actually taking care of itself for you.  Job done.  But of course you still from time to time have to manually check and delete dead emails.

So don’t forget, one unsubscribed person from your list make way for another two new subscribers, in turn helping you to build a healthier email list.

2. Too many people unsubscribing? That’s your cue to start making improvements…

There are many reasons why people unsubscribe from email lists, pin-pointing the exact reason can prove to be a challenge, but take this advice very seriously, if people are unsubscribing from your email list and are providing you with good feedback as to the reason why, act on it.  Don’t let it sit, take action to see where and how you can improve your email campaigns in the future.

Perhaps the content you’re providing isn’t interesting or helpful enough; maybe you need to make more effort in providing value rather than promoting products and services, or self-promoting yourself too much.  Don’t take this the wrong way, I’m just pointing out some possibilities.

I use MailChimp and each time someone unsubscribes, there is an opportunity for them to provide me with some feedback as to why they chose to opt out.

3. Less ‘dead emails’ means less expenses and time wasted…

When you’re starting out with your email list and doing email marketing, the costs of sending email campaigns are relatively low.  But as your blog grows, so does your list, and you begin to invest more time and more money into developing your campaigns.  So my point is if you have a ton of dead emails in your list, this can be costly to your blogging business.

So the next time you log into your email marketing service provider and notice that a bunch of people have unsubscribed, think of the time and money you’ll be saving.

The bottom line…

Don’t stress too much about those who remove themselves from your email list, even if it’s people who you’ve made a real effort to connect with and engage with outside of your blog (perhaps on social media sites).  And even if it’s people you respect and look up to, it doesn’t matter, you can’t cater for everyone.

What should matter is that you’re making every effort to see that your subscriber list is growing, and that the number of people signing up outweighs the number of people unsubscribing.  If that’s truly happening then you have nothing to worry about.
