Link Building to the Same Page!

This is just a quick pointer; I am still creating the next part of Intermediate SEO, and just want to quickly get some useful information out to everyone!

Link Building is the core to any SEO campaign, and link building using the almighty anchor text is the way to build trust to a particular term and relevant page. However could it be that you are leaving a pattern that could be damaging to your site?

Building links using the same anchor text over and over again doesn’t look very natural, so there is always the possibility a pattern begins to emerge. Once this pattern creeps up, could you be penalised for it? Not necessarily but it is a possibility. I have actually witnessed sites that only link using their domain name for very competitive terms, and those that link purely with anchor text not perform very well.

An underrated value of linking is using semantics. If you were to build links using varied by semantically viable keywords would they not increase the look and feel of natural linking, and would they also in essence be the same keyword? Here is an example of different keywords, but semantically the same:

Egypt holidays

Holidays to Egypt

Holidays in Egypt

Egypt holiday

Egyptian holidays

All of these terms target and mean exactly the same thing. However they are all completely different key terms, which will almost always rank differently. Surely if they all target the same thing, should they not all rank in the same way? The perfect practice of link building would be to link build to all of these terms as you would then appear for different results, improve organic and natural awareness, and increase traffic.

There are some people that suggest that Google doesn’t pay attention to fillers like “To” and “In”, but I would argue this almost every time. I would guarantee that the two terms where they are mentioned above will rank differently. It all comes down to the semantics on the page after that. Even if there are just a couple of positions in it, they almost certainly will be different. Now if you look at all of those terms in Google, you will find that there are several differences. Even though they all mean and target exactly the same pages, and same term.

So it’s up to you if you want to vary your terms, obviously I would still weigh more work on the main term, but try to be more natural, and mix things up. Next part of Intermediate SEO will be ready soon. Maybe some link building opportunities!
